In honor of our beloved Ayita, our founder took over MPS Army, now known as Ayita’s MPS Mission.

The goal of Ayita’s MPS Mission is to rescue, educate, and eradicate MPS.

Mucopolysaccharidosis, also known as MPS, is an inherited metabolic disease caused by the absence or malfunctioning of certain enzymes the body needs to break down molecules called glycosaminoglycans.

Glycosaminoglycans are long chains of sugars (carbohydrates). These cells help build bone, cartilage, tendons, corneas, skin, and connective tissue.

The symptoms of MPS are:
• Slow growth
• Unusually broad chest
• Large head
• Dwarfism
• Corneal clouding and/or ocular lesions
• Weakness in the hind legs and/or deformed legs
• Enlarged liver
• Tracheal dysplasia
• Congestive heart failure

Dogs (and humans) affected by MPS have a very short lifespan.

MPS is inherited, which means that the gene comes from a parent. In order to eradicate, we must educate.

The requirements to test for MPS are:
• Urinalysis
• Complete blood count
• Tissue samples
• DNA test
• Lymph node biopsy
